What Is a Quirk?
A Quirk is a superpower that a person is born with in My Hero Academia. About 80 percent of the world population has a Quirk, and a Quirk usually appears by age 4. The first Quirk appeared in a baby born in Qing Qing City, China, who glowed with light. A person without a Quirk is called Quirkless, as Izuku Midoriya was at the start of the story.
The My Hero Academia Wiki sorts Quirks into 3 types. An Emitter Quirk releases or controls something, a Transformation Quirk changes the body for a time, and a Mutant Quirk is a permanent trait of the body. Many children inherit a Quirk from a parent or mix the Quirks of both parents.

How to Name a Quirk?
A good Quirk name says what the power does in 1 or 2 plain words. My Hero Academia uses short, direct names, such as Explosion, Hardening, and Zero Gravity. A 2 word name works well when the first word names the power and the second word shows how it works. The table below shows the 3 Quirk types with an example for each.
| Quirk Type | How It Works | Canon Example | Example Quirk | What It Does |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Emitter | Releases or controls something outside the body | Explosion | Ember Burst | Releases bursts of glowing embers from the body |
| Transformation | Changes the body for a short time | Hardening | Granite Skin | Hardens the skin with a layer of granite |
| Mutant | A permanent trait of the body | Frog | Feather Wings | Born with wings made of feathers |
4 Quick Tips for Naming a Quirk
- Name the power plainly. Canon Quirks use clear words, so a reader knows the power from the name alone.
- Match the type. An Emitter suits Beam or Wave, and a Mutant suits Wings or Claws.
- Give the Quirk a weakness. Most canon Quirks have a drawback, such as Uravity getting sick from too much Zero Gravity.
- Keep it short. A name of 1 or 2 words is easy to shout in battle, like Volt Beam.
