What Is a Nen Ability?

A Nen ability, called a Hatsu, is the unique power a Nen user builds from their own aura in Hunter x Hunter. Nen is the art of controlling aura, the life energy inside every living thing. Gon Freecss uses Jajanken, Killua Zoldyck uses Godspeed, and Kurapika uses Chain Jail.

Every Nen user is born with 1 of 6 Nen types: Enhancement, Transmutation, Emission, Conjuration, Manipulation, or Specialization. The Hunter x Hunter Wiki explains that a user finds their type with water divination, a test with a leaf floating on a glass of water. A user can make a Hatsu stronger by adding limits and vows, as Kurapika does with his chains.

How to Name a Nen Ability?

A good Nen ability name is short, catchy, and hints at how the power works. Many canon names sound playful, such as Bungee Gum and Texture Surprise, which makes the real danger a surprise. Other names sound grim, such as Chain Jail. The table below shows the 6 Nen types with an example for each.

4 Quick Tips for Naming a Nen Ability

  • Match the Nen type. A Conjurer suits an object word, such as Cage or Key, and an Emitter suits Shot or Cannon.
  • Hide the danger. A playful name like Bubble Thread makes a deadly power more of a surprise.
  • Add a vow. Canon abilities grow stronger with limits, so a name that hints at a rule, such as Contract, fits well.
  • Keep it 2 words. Short names are easy to call out, like Phantom Missile.
