What Is a Giff?
A giff is a hippopotamus-headed humanoid from the Spelljammer setting of Dungeons and Dragons. Giff stand 8 to 9 feet tall and serve as mercenaries on ships that sail between worlds. They live by order and rank, keep their promises, and love firearms and explosions.
Giff distrust magic, but they accept it for spelljamming, the only way to travel between worlds. 4 Quick Tips for Naming a Giff
- Start with a rank. A rank such as Major or Sergeant shows where the giff stands in the chain of command.
- Sound a bit grand. Long, old-fashioned names like Bartholomew and Clementine suit the giff sense of pride.
- Promote the name. A giff only changes rank when a superior allows it, so a new rank in the name marks a big story moment.
- Skip official names. Names like Algernon and Horatio come from the official lore, so the generator leaves them out.
