What Is a Changeling?
A changeling is a shapeshifter who can change its face, voice, and body to look like another person. In Dungeons & Dragons, changelings come from the world of Eberron and became a playable race in Eberron: Rising from the Last War (2019). Their true form has pale skin, colorless eyes, and silver-white hair.
The idea comes from European folklore. In old tales, a changeling was a fairy child left in place of a stolen human baby, as the Wikipedia entry on changelings explains. A D&D changeling often keeps a set of personas, called masks, and each mask has its own name.

How to Name a Changeling Character?
A changeling needs 2 kinds of names: a short changeling name for its true self, and a full name for each mask it wears. Changelings see gender as fluid, so the short names in this generator are unisex. Each one comes from a short word about shape or disguise, such as Old Norse hamr (shape) or Welsh rhith (guise). Mask names sound like ordinary names, so the mask can blend in. The table below shows both name types.
| Name Type | Mask Style | Example Name | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Changeling Name | None | Rithen | Guise |
| Changeling Name | None | Hamis | Shape |
| Mask Name | Noble | Odette Ashcombe | Wealth, the ash tree valley |
| Mask Name | Merchant | Felix Goldwright | Lucky, the gold maker |
| Mask Name | Rogue | Silas Quickhand | Of the forest, the quick hand |
| Mask Name | Scholar | Celia Inkwell | Heavenly, the ink well |
| Mask Name | Soldier | Corin Ironhelm | Spear, the iron helm |
4 Quick Tips for Naming a Changeling
- Keep the true name short. Short names like Selo and Vela are easy to keep secret and easy to say.
- Give every mask its own name. A merchant mask and a soldier mask work better with different names, such as Felix Goldwright and Corin Ironhelm.
- Match the mask to the place. A mask name blends in best when it sounds like the people around it.
- Skip gender for the true name. Changelings treat gender as fluid, so a unisex name like Glasen fits any changeling.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good changeling name?
A good changeling name is short and easy to hide. Examples include Rithen (guise), Hamis (shape), and Selo (seal). For a persona, a full mask name like Felix Goldwright works better.
Do changelings have more than one name?
Yes. Many changelings use a different name for each mask, or persona, that they wear. A changeling might be a merchant in one city and a soldier in another, with a new name for each.
Are changeling names gendered?
No. Changelings see gender as fluid, so their own names are unisex. Mask names can be male or female, because each mask copies a person.
