What Is a Duergar?
A duergar is a gray dwarf from Dungeons & Dragons who lives in the Underdark, far below the surface. Duergar have gray skin, little or no hair, and eyes that see well in darkness but suffer in sunlight. In the lore, mind flayers once enslaved the duergar. They broke free with psionic powers that let them grow to a large size or turn invisible.
The name comes from English folklore. The word duergar likely traces back to Old Norse dvergar, meaning dwarves, as the Wikipedia entry on duergar explains. In D&D, duergar worship Laduguer, a grim god of toil and duty.

4 Quick Tips for Naming a Duergar
- Keep it hard and short. Duergar names sound like stone and metal, so harsh sounds like k, g, and r fit, as in Kolrik.
- Always add the clan. Duergar value clan and duty, so a clan name like Grayshadow tells others where loyalty lies.
- Use a Mind name for psionics. Duergar can grow or turn invisible with psionic power, and a name like Draumgrim (dream mask) hints at it.
- Skip sunny words. Duergar hate sunlight, so dark words like gloom, ash, and soot fit better than bright ones.
